Chimney Engineer / Technician
Chimney Engineers/Technicians ensures that domestic and site based chimneys and flues are installed and maintained to strict safety standards.
The Role
- Designing and installing chimney and flue systems in accordance with current legislation and regulations
- Inspection of existing chimney and flue systems
- Preparing and adhering to method statements for site works; including health and safety risk assessments
- Repairing and renewing existing chimney and flue systems
- Ensuring that health and safety rules are adhered to
- Must have knowledge of and work to the most current guidelines and regulations at all times
- As much of a Chimney Technician’s work is carried out in people’s homes it is important that they have good communication skills and are polite and courteous at all times
- This kind of work is very physical and involves working at height.
- A lot of work may be outdoors and Chimney Engineers/Technicians would need to work in all weather conditions.
- To ensure safety, personal protective clothing (PPE) would be expected to be worn on site, including a full body harness and fall arrest systems.
- The working week for a chimney engineer is typically 40 hours per week.
Salary
- At the beginning of their career, you can expect to earn £17,000 to£20,000
- As you progress in your career, you can earn up to around £35,000
Qualifications & Training
There are no formal requirements for qualifications although it would help to have GCSEs/ Standard grades in English and maths at grade 9-4 (A*-C), Welsh Baccalaureate or equivalent.
To become a qualified Chimney Engineer/Technician, it is usual to start as an engineer’s assistant or apprentice gaining valuable site experience and working towards the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Chimney Engineering qualification.
