Dispatch Manager
Dispatch Managers are responsible for managing the timely dispatch of completed orders from the production facility or warehouse to the customer.
The Role
  • Ensuring products are dispatched on time, using specialist transport and in accordance with quality requirements
  • Managing and motivating a team of staff, ensuring an effective distribution operation
  • Monitoring site production to ensure orders are completed on time and in full
  • Planning work rotas
  • Organising staff training and recruitment
  • Ensuring vehicles and drivers comply with legal requirements
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Implementing improvements to the distribution operation
  • Carrying out performance management and managing absence
  • The working environment can vary and the day may be spent either office-based or in the warehousing facility
  • In a full-time position, Dispatch Leaders/Managers usually work between 36 and 45 hours per week
  • Shift work can be required and overtime may be necessary in order to meet deadlines
  • Trainee and newly trained Dispatch Leaders/Managers can earn in the region of £20,000 to £25,000
  • Trained with experience, Dispatch Leaders/Managers can earn in the region of £25,000 to £45,000
  • More experienced Dispatch Leaders/Managers may earn in excess of £45,000
Salaries typically range depending on location and level of responsibility.
Qualifications & Training
You would normally move into this role after gaining relevant supervisory experience, whether by working through the ranks or moving into the role from a similar field. Some prospective employers may prefer graduates while others will consider industry experience and personal qualities in preference to formal qualifications. In terms of formal qualifications, the subjects studied can often be flexible, however, a degree, HND/HNC or foundation degree in fields such as management, business, IT or economics may be advantageous. Some firms operate management trainee schemes for those who hold a foundation degree or a degree in a suitable subject. Trainees are able to enter the profession with limited industry experience and follow a structured career progression programme.
