Goods In Managers are responsible for managing the in-bound process of receiving goods and materials into a facility.
The Role
  • Receiving and registering materials to inspecting items for quality and quantity, ensuring that a variety of tasks are completed quickly and accurately by the team
  • Working closely with suppliers and section staff to ensure all material arriving is in accordance with purchase order specifications
  • Monitoring storage space and tracking stock levels
  • Ensuring stock is stored correctly and safely
  • Managing pick schedules around production plans
  • Maintaining inventory levels
  • Investigating stock discrepancies
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Implementing improvements to the inbound process
  • Carrying out performance management and managing absence
  • Operating systems such as KANBAN
  • Materials deliveries – to improve delivery to plan for items
  • Manage supplier performance to minimise stock-outs (consignment stock, stock call-offs)
  • Stock levels – to ensure inventory levels are held <2% of turnover
  • Stock locations - materials are managed to identified bays in yard/factory
  • Stock control – to ensure that materials are not lost through control of issue and acceptance
  • Managing physical Inventory
  • Leading a team and scheduling work loads / rotas
  • Organising staff training and recruitment
  • Mainly office-based, this supervisory role would require some time spent on the factory floor and in the warehousing facility
  • Working between 36 and 45 hours per week
  • Shift work can be required and overtime may be necessary in order to meet deadlines
  • Trainee and newly trained Goods In Managers can earn in the region of £17,000 to £20,000
  • Trained with experience Goods In Managers can earn in the region of £20,000 to £40,000
  • More experienced Goods In Managers may earn in excess of £40,000

Qualifications & Training
You would normally move into this role after gaining relevant supervisory experience, whether by working through the ranks or moving into the role from a similar field. Some prospective employers may prefer graduates while others will consider industry experience and personal qualities in preference to formal qualifications. In terms of formal qualifications, the subjects studied can often be flexible, however, a degree, HND/HNC or foundation degree in fields such as management, business, IT or economics may be advantageous. Some firms operate management trainee schemes for those who hold a foundation degree or a degree in a suitable subject. Trainees are able to enter the profession with limited industry experience and follow a structured career progression programme.
